Week at a Glance

Hello Storrington Stingers,

We hope that all of our Stingers have had a great spring break.  We also hope that this email finds you all well and healthy.  We want to begin by saying that all the Storrington staff are thinking of our Stingers and are missing you all!  Although it’s not the same, we look forward to seeing our Stingers virtually.

Please see the information below in this week’s Week at a Glance.

A Big Thank You to Our Amazing School Council

Please join us in sending a big thank you to our School Council for all their work organizing and creating the Stinger April Break Adventure Take Home Bags.  We hope that all our families were able to enjoy the family fun ideas together.  We are truly grateful and blessed to have a council that’s so dedicated and committed to supporting our school community.

The school council would greatly appreciate it if a member from each family would take the time to complete a couple of survey questions.  The questions can be found on their Facebook page (Storrington Public School Parent Community).  If you do not have Facebook, please email them at pc.storrington@gmail.com.

Staffing News

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Lisa Angelo to the Storrington community.  Due to the class sizes in our Grades 4/5 and Grades 6/7 classes, the board has provided us with an extra teacher to support in both those classes.  Through the staffing process, Ms. Angelo was the successful candidate.  She has extensive experience teaching various grades at the elementary level.  Most recently, Ms. Angelo was teaching at the Limestone Virtual School.  We know that Ms. Angelo will be an amazing addition to the Storrington family.

Remote Learning Information

A reminder that on the morning of Monday, April 19, families will receive an email from your child’s classroom teacher.  Within the email, will be instructions on how to access your child’s Google Classroom and expectations for the week, which will include times for Google Meets.  Learning tasks will also be posted to your child’s Google Classroom which can be completed and submitted.

Throughout the week, we ask that families continue to check their email for any updates or new information.  If families need to reach the school, you can contact the school directly as calls will be answered and school voice mail will be retrieved throughout the week.

Much like our staff, we know that many families are at different levels of comfort and understanding in navigating the online platforms and learning.  Please know that this is okay and give yourself permission to take it slow and to go at your own pace.  The most important thing is everyone’s well-being and health.  Staff will continue to reach out to families to provide support in any way possible.  If you continue to have difficulty with the pace of learning or the learning activities, please don’t hesitate to connect with your child’s teacher.  We are here to assist you and truly believe that together, we’ll work through this process.

Helpful Remote Learning Tips

As we navigate to remote learning, below are some tips from the Children’s Mental Health Ontario website to help ease frustration and anxiety:

1) Protect your family’s downtime-  You don’t want your child(ren) feeling like they’re living at school.  Doing stuff as a family is a great way to help your child(ren) relax and unwind.

2) Tuck your child(ren)’s learning materials out of sight when it’s time to switch into family mode-  When you transition to family time, putting your child’s learning materials in a place where they can’t be seen is a great way to show that the learning is done for the day.

3)  Encourage your child to speak openly about any challenges or frustrations they are experiencing-  We know that remote learning can be a challenging and frustrating experience.  It is important to validate your child(ren)’s feelings and let them know that what they’re feeling is normal.

4)  Continue to prioritize your child’s mental health and well-being- Your child(ren) can only learn and grow if they feel safe and secure, so meeting their mental health needs is extremely important.

Earth Day

Earth Day is on Thursday, April 22.  This is a day dedicated to bringing awareness to climate change and environmental disasters.  It is also a day to recognize our role in ensuring we are doing our part to reduce our ecological footprint and working towards a greener Earth.  On April 22, we encourage all our Stingers to wear green to their virtual meetings.

Mental Health and Well-Being

As you continue to support your child(ren) during this time, we encourage you to reach out to other families in the community to share ideas and strategies.  As well, take the time to access community or board resources to support your child’s mental health and well-being.  Parents are welcome to email or call the school if you have specific questions regarding mental health resources and/or supports that are available to support your child(ren).  Parents are also encouraged to visit the School Mental Health Ontario website for a list of resources and activities to support mental health and well-being.  Information can be found by accessing the following website:  https://smho-smso.ca/parents-and-families/
