Week at a Glance

Hello Storrington Stingers,

We hope that this email finds all our Stingers well and healthy.

Please see the information below in this week’s Week at a Glance.

LDSB Virtual School Opt-In/Opt-Out Date

Elementary families wishing to move students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 from in-person learning to LDSB Virtual School must contact their current school. Elementary families wishing to move from LDSB Virtual School back to in-person learning must notify the in-person school they would normally attend. Any elementary family looking to change their student’s learning model must do so before 4 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2021. Once schools determine staffing needs, and if space is available, approved changes would take effect during the week of Monday, March 8, 2021.

Inclement Weather- Bus Cancellations

If buses are canceled due to inclement weather, we ask that families continue to report their child’s absence using Safe Arrival.  Since schools usually remain open when buses are canceled, we are still required to take attendance to know where students are, to ensure their safety.  When reporting your child’s absence in Safe Arrival, please report it as a G-Day, Buses Cancelled.

Student Immunization

KFL&A Public Health will be postponing the enforcement of the Immunization of School Pupils Act for this school year and will not implement suspension actions this spring.  Nevertheless, we ask that parents report any required vaccine(s) that a student has already received by the proposed deadline of February 18th, 2021.

Students missing vaccines, can see their regular health care provider as soon as possible and then update their record with KFL&A Public Health.

Students without a health card or doctor can book an appointment to receive free vaccines at KFL&A Public Health clinics. Go to //kflaph.ca/Appointments to book an appointment.

We recognize this may be a stressful time, however, we encourage families to provide the requested information due to the heightened importance of protecting against vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks in our school communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021-2022 School Year Calendar

Planning for the 2021-2022 school year has begun and the Limestone District School Board is seeking feedback from families on the proposed 2021-2022 school-year calendar.

The calendar is prepared in consultation with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board stakeholders, as we share busing.

Families in our district are invited to take a few minutes to provide input via an online survey.

If families would prefer a paper version of the survey, please contact your school and a hard copy will be provided.

The survey is open for responses until Friday, February 12, 2021.

Your input is important to us and we appreciate your time in submitting your comments.

For more information, please visit the school year calendar page on the LDSB website which also provides a link to the Ministry of Education website.

Valentine’s Day Cards/Treats

Due to COVID protocol and to ensure student and staff safety, we will not be allowing students to bring in any Valentine’s Day cards or treats.  Within classes, students will complete their own kindness and caring activities to recognize Valentine’s Day.  We are also asking students to wear red, pink, or white for Red, Pink, and White Day on February 12.

Student Pictures

Due to the extended school closure, Lifetouch Photography has provided us with a new due date for photo orders.  Orders placed before Friday, February 12, 2021, will receive free shipping and handling.  Orders placed after Friday, February 12 will be subject to a $5.99 shipping and handling fee.

Technology Return

Thank you to all our families who have returned their borrowed devices to the school.  If you still have a school device (iPad or Chromebook) please send the device back to school with your child or set up a time for drop-off by calling the school.  We are hoping that all devices can be returned as soon as possible so that they can be used for in-class instruction.

Yard Supervisor Needed

We currently have a community member who is interested in sharing in the yard supervision duties with another person.   If you are interested in sharing in this position, please contact the school office.  The position involves yard supervision daily, from 10:30 to 11:30 and 1:00 to 2:00.  Compensation is provided.  A valid CPIC is required.

KFLA Public Health COVID Protocol

It is important that we continue to follow the KFLA Public Health COVID protocol.

The KFLA Public Health protocol requires any students who are displaying a primary symptom (fever over 37.8, shortness of breath, cough, or loss of sense of smell/taste) to stay home, self-isolate and contact an assessment centre or health care provider.  It is also recommended that household members isolate until the child/student receives a negative test result.

If a student has one secondary symptom (sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or muscle aches), they are expected to stay home for at least 24 hours after symptoms begin to improve.

If a student has two or more secondary symptoms, students are required to stay home, self-isolate and contact an assessment center or health care provider.  Again, it is recommended that household members isolate until the child/student receives a negative test result.
