Week at a Glance

Hello Storrington Stingers,

We hope that all of our Stingers are safe and healthy.

Please see the information below in this week’s Week at a Glance.

National Indigenous Peoples’ Languages Day

On Wednesday, March 31, 2021, we will recognize National Indigenous Peoples’ Languages Day.  It is a day to celebrate and honour the strength and endurance of Indigenous Language and Culture Champions in bringing awareness to the importance of Indigenous languages, cultures and teachings.

World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is on Friday, April 2, 2021.  On Thursday, April  1, we will take the time to recognize and spread awareness for the rights of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  It is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of individuals with ASD.

Helpful Reading Tips

There are many ways parents can support their child(ren) with their reading.  Below is a list of tips from the Ontario Ministry of Education.

-Talk to your child(ren)- Oral language is the foundation for reading.

-Make reading fun.

-Read every day- Schedule times for reading and make it a routine.

-Set an example- Model for your child(ren) the importance of reading, especially when it’s for pleasure or information.

-Talk about books- talking and reflecting about books is just as important as reading them.

-Listen to your child(ren) read- When your child(ren) reads to you, it gives them a chance to practice their skills.

-Show that you value your child(ren)’s effort- Provide lots of praise for their effort.

Outdoor Clothing

Due to our current COVID guidelines and expectations, we are trying to get our Stingers outside as much as possible.  This is an opportunity for our Stingers to take off their masks and get some fresh air.  During the springtime, certain areas of our yard often become very wet and muddy.  Although we try to limit student access to these areas, accidents do occur.  We encourage our younger Stingers to come to school with an extra set of clothing, rubber boots and splash pants.

Covid Protocol

The COVID-19 School & Child Care Screening Tool is to be used by school board staff as well as students. The revised tool includes changes to stay-at-home requirements for those with symptoms and isolation requirements for household contacts of those with symptoms.

Effective immediately:

Staff and students with any new or worsening symptom of COVID-19, even those with only one symptom, must stay home until:

-They receive a negative COVID-19 test result.

-They receive an alternative diagnosis by a health care professional, or

-It has been 10 days since their symptom onset and they are feeling better.

If the symptomatic individual tests positive for COVID-19, or is not tested, and does not receive an alternative diagnosis from a health-care professional, the symptomatic individual must isolate (including from household members) for 10 days from symptom onset. All household contacts must isolate until 14 days from their last contact with the symptomatic individual (a total of 24 days if the symptomatic individual is not able to effectively self isolate from other members of the household).

Mental Health and Well-Being

As you continue to support your child(ren) during this time, we encourage you to reach out to other families in the community to share ideas and strategies.  As well, take the time to access community or board resources to support your child’s mental health and well-being.  Parents are welcome to email or call the school if you have specific questions regarding mental health resources and/or supports that are available to support your child(ren).  Parents are also encouraged to visit the School Mental Health Ontario website for a list of resources and activities to support mental health and well-being.  Information can be found by accessing the following website:  https://smho-smso.ca/parents-and-families/
