Week at a Glance

Hello Storrington Stingers,

We continue to miss seeing all our students and the joy of being together.  This experience has shown us that Storrington is more than a school, it is a community where we all support each other regardless of whether we’re in the same building.  The daily interactions might be different but the relationships and connections continue to be what makes Storrington such an amazing school to be part of.  On behalf of the Storrington staff, we want to thank you for everything you do to make our school community so special.

We understand how difficult and complex this situation is and we are very appreciative of all the work that you’re doing to ensure that the learning continues.   Please know that we are here to support you with anything that you might need.  If you need assistance with any of the learning activities, don’t hesitate to connect with your child(ren)’s teacher.

We are still waiting to hear from the Ministry of Education around what the rest of the school year will look like.  We are hoping that information and further direction will be shared soon.

Please see the information below in this week’s Week at a Glance.

Speech and Hearing Awareness Month

The month of May is Speech and Hearing Awareness Month.  It is estimated that 1 in 10 Canadians has a speech, language or hearing disorder.  Hearing loss is one of the world’s most common health problems. It can happen to anyone at any age.  Approximately 3 in every 1000 children are born with hearing loss or will develop a hearing loss in their childhood and one of every 1000 babies is born totally deaf. Hearing loss of any degree can significantly affect one’s ability to learn.

During the month, teachers will be implementing learning activities into their virtual teaching to bring awareness and understanding to people living with a speech, language or hearing disorder and the importance of early detection.

Mental Health Week/Education Week

This week is Mental Health Week.  Mental Health Week occurs during the first week of May and is dedicated to bringing awareness to issues regarding mental health and reducing the stigma associated with mental health.  Education Week also occurs during this week and provides school boards and schools with the opportunity to recognize and celebrate student achievement and the role that education plays in our lives.

During the week, classes will participate in learning activities that focus on mental health and well-being.

Below is a list of activities that you can do to take a break and help support your mental health and well-being.

Parents are also encouraged to visit the School Mental Health Ontario website for a list of resources and activities to support mental health and well-being.  Information can be found by accessing the following website:  https://smho-smso.ca/parents-and-families/

Celebration of Dance

On Thursday, May 6, many of our Storrington classes will be participating in the Celebration of Dance.  The Celebration of Dance will be held virtually this year.  We hope that all our Stingers can participate in the event and have some fun while getting some exercise!  Classroom teachers will share more information around the Celebration of Dance and how it will be facilitated virtually.
We are also encouraging our Stingers to wear their school spirit wear or school colours.
