Hello Stinger Families,
We hope that this communication finds you all well and healthy. Hopefully, all our Stinger families had a great summer vacation with lots of rest, relaxation and time with friends and family.
On behalf of all the staff at Storrington Public School, we would like to welcome our newest Stingers and welcome back our returning Stingers. We are looking forward to seeing all the excitement and smiling faces on the first day of school. We know students will do an amazing job transitioning back to 'school life' and will be ready to continue with their learning journey.
We are really looking forward to working with all our students and supporting their academic, social and emotional growth. As partners in education, we are excited to continue our work together in ensuring your child's success. Please know that we value the relationship between the school and home. Lines of communication are always open and we welcome parental input and feedback. If at any time, you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the school.
To help with the transition back to school, we have provided some information to some possible questions you might have. In this memo, you will find a lot of information about our return to school. All newsletters and memos will be emailed through our School Messenger system and posted to our school website. We want to welcome some new staff to Storrington Public School. Please join me in welcoming Sarah Purvis, Lisa Renaud, Melanie Laird and Emily Crawford. We know that they will all make fantastic additions to the Storrington team.
What does my child need on the first day of school?
We ask that all students come with the following:
-A full-sized backpack/knapsack to carry everything they will need to pack up everyday.
-An insulated lunch bag, and a water bottle with spout.
-A peanut free/nut free lunch and snacks.
-Indoor and outdoor shoes they can put on and off themselves (e.g., Velcro or slip on)
-Comfortable clothes and a complete change of clothes in a Ziploc bag, just in case.
-Everything labelled with your child’s name.
-Schools will supply all school supplies such as pens, pencils, markers, crayons, erasers, glue sticks, etc.
When will I find out who my child(ren)’s teacher is?
When students arrive to school on Tuesday, September 5, staff will be on the yard to let students know which class they’re in. Students will be directed to their classroom zone, where they will line up and wait for the bell to ring. Class placement information will not be shared prior to Tuesday, as placements can always change depending on enrollment numbers.
How do I know my child(ren)’s busing information?
You can view your student busing information for the 2023-2024 school year by visiting the Triboard website at www.triboard.ca. To Find out your child(ren)’s bus #, pick up/drop off times, and stop location, scroll to the 2023-2024 Student Portal tab and fill in the necessary information. Your child(ren)’s OEN is available on your last report card. If you require your child(ren)’s OEN number, please contact the school.
What do I do if my child(ren) has an appointment and arrives to school late or has to leave school early?
We ask that all information regarding early pick-up be communicated with the classroom teacher prior to pick-up. If you’re unable to communicate early pick-up with your child(ren)’s teacher, we ask that you call the school to let the office know at least 15 minutes prior to pick-up. Once you get to the school, please ring the buzzer and we will bring your child out to you.
If you need to drop off your child, after the start of the school day, please buzz at the front door. Your child will then be let in. We ask that students go directly to the office to be signed in and get a late slip.
It will be very important to have children at school on time this year, and where possible to schedule appointments outside of school hours.
Is Storrington a Tree Nut/Peanut Free or Scent Free School?
Please remember that we are a tree nut/peanut free school and have students with severe allergies to both tree nuts and peanuts. When packing lunches, please refrain from packing anything that might contain tree nuts or peanuts. As well, we also have staff and students who have sensitivities to scents. We ask for your support in ensuring your child doesn’t wear any scented perfumes or colognes. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
What if I need to share allergy or medical information with the school?
If your child has a serious or significant medical condition (asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, epilepsy), please complete the appropriate medical plan of care that is attached to this email. Once you have completed the medical plan of care, you can email it to [email protected] or send it into the school with your child. All plans of care will be shared with staff members and your child’s bus driver. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the school.
Do I need to pack a litterless lunch for my child?
In being environmentally friendly and to reduce the amount of garbage in landfills, we ask that all students bring in a litter less lunch to school. In looking for ways to limit our ecological footprint, please discuss with your child all the things that you can do to make their lunch more eco-friendly.
How do I report my child’s absence?
A child's regular attendance at school has a direct impact on their academic success and school readiness. It is important that students arrive on time and participate in all aspects of the instructional day.
If your child is going to be late or absent, there are three ways to report your child’s absence:
1) Use your mobile device by downloading and installing the SchoolMessenger blue app or access it from the LDSB mobile app.
2) Use the SafeArrival website at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca
3) Call the toll-free number at 1-855-257-9349
*Please do not call the school directly to report your child’s absence.
What communication tools does the school use?
We use several tools to communicate information from school to home. Weekly reminders will be sent out using our Communicate broadcasting system. Parents can also access our school website at www.storrington.limestone.on.ca or our Twitter account @StorrPS_LDSB.
Some classes use agendas as a form of communication between home and school. Please use this as a tool for communication with the school and classroom teacher. We ask that all students bring in $5.00 to cover the costs of the agenda.
What do I do with the forms that are sent home?
At the beginning of each school year, there are lots of forms that need to be signed and returned. We ask that all parents review, sign and return any applicable forms. This information is important to ensure that we have up-to-date information and contact numbers.
What will recess look like?
All students will go out for recess at the same time. Students will have access to the space that is designated for their grade/division.
What will the school entry and dismissal transitions look like for my child?
Students getting a ride to school should try not to arrive before the bell. Students will be able to access the yard and playground before the bell. When the entry bell rings, students they will meet in their designated classroom zone until they are met by their teacher at 9:05.
After school, parents will not be able to pick up their child until all bused students have made their way onto their buses. Once all the students have embarked on their buses, students and their classroom teachers will make their way out the main entrance for dismissal. We ask that all parents wait by the main entrance until their child(ren) is/are brought out and dismissed.
How can I further support my child(ren) with the transition back to school?
Continue to be positive with your language and feelings about the return to school. Acknowledge your child(ren)’s concerns and try to provide reassurance when/where needed. Allow for dialogue and try to answer any questions they might have. Remember, children are perceptive and will look to us for direction.
